Furnace and Heat Pump Usage

We have been staying in Florida for the past 3 winters. Unfortunately, there are times when the weather here is actually colder then back home. This has lead us to “cranking the heat” quite a lot. For the most part, the heat pumps take care of warming the coach very well. However when the temperature drops to below 40ish we always turn on the funace. We noticed that when the weather is colder (below 40) the heat pumps tend to run the entire time, not shutting off for any sort of “break.” Heat pumps were not meant to work this way! We woke up one morning to the sounds of a “struggling heat pump.” It was not a happy sound! In fact we think … Read entire article »

Werda Hecamiat

For those who need translation: “Where-The-Heck-Am-I-At” A visit to beautiful Lake Panasoffkee, FL is not complete withouth a meal at the Werda Hecamiat Fishing Logde – also known as the “Cracker Shack” by the locals and snow birds. We first discovered the restaurant back in 2008 – it was recommended to us by some friends. We were told that the meals were good and the price was right. Little did we know we were in for some true cooking greatness at really affordable prices. At our first visit, I had the “Sampler” and Russ had the “Prime Rib.” The “Sampler” included the following, all fried: 2 mushrooms, 2 chicken wings, 2 chicken strips, 2 shrimp, 2 scallops, and 2 large pieces of fish. The food nearly fell of the plate there … Read entire article »

Dog Park at James Island County Park

Its always great when you find a dog park that is just a few minutes walk from your campground. And we found a wonderful dog park at James Island County Park, in South Carolina. The size of the park is probably about 3 acres. It’s surrounded on 3 sides by water and then the back of the park by fencing. There is a small area for smaller dogs too. There were lots of people and dogs when we visited. With a mix of both local people and guests from the campground. We didn’t encounter any dogs that were unfriendly. All the owners were attentive to their animals. This was a nice change since we’ve had some bad experiences! Shannon (our dog) of course had a wonderful … Read entire article »

Canopy Tip – Beware of Wind

This tip is the result of the increasingly windy weather we are currently having in Florida. About 2 weeks ago, when the sun was out and the breeze light, Russ and I purchased a nice canopy and set it up next to the RV. The intention was to have a shaded area we could sit in when the sun was beating down on us. Your see, our site is currently in the sun all day. And our awning, when folded out, does not give any shade because the angle of the sun is too low in the sky. Therefore you can either sit in the sun, or sit inside. Anyway, back to the canopy…. For a few days we really enjoyed our new canopy! We played cards and … Read entire article »

RV Window Condensation Build Up

I have noticed with the very cold weather in Florida this winter, the windshield has condensation on it every morning. The cause is the cold air and warm air barrier..the privacy curtain. Unless you want to keep the windshield curtain open, you will have this condition. We have opened the curtain at bed time and eliminated the water from appearing on the windshield. All of the other windows in my coach are double glass and have not reacted in the same way as the windshield does. In New Hampshire during the summer months we rarely see condensation on the windshield. As the weather gets colder in Sept/Oct. and the heat is running, we see the moisture appear again and start opening the front curtain and that stops the problem. It is … Read entire article »

RV Awning Wind and Storm Damage and Destruction

The awning on your rv is designed to provide shade from the sun. There are other benifits such as providing some shelter when it rains. You should always close your awning when you leave the campsite. This will prevent it from tearing off in a sudden thunder storm or wind gust. It only takes one quick unplanned gust to ruin the awning and tear holes in your rv after ripping the hardware off and possibly damaging not only your rv but a neighbor’s too. I’ve seen an awning tube shoot through the windshield of a neighbor’s rig before and it creates a huge problem and several days of delay for the windshield to be replaced etc. I’ve been told lots of stories about the damage done by awnings to rv’s. … Read entire article »
