Awnings and the Snow

After a long days drive we parked at a beautiful campground and decided that it would be exciting to put the awning out and have a campfire.

Under normal circumstances this would be a fantastic idea. However this is not such a good idea if it is snowing!

We were a bit preoccupied by the fact that we were on our way to Florida (from NH) and on our first day we ended up driving part way in the snow and freezing rain. After having landed at our site, the snow had picked up, which was really beautiful.  The firepit for our campsite was strategically located just outside the perimiter of the open awning and we thought it would be just “awesome” to start a fire and sit under the awning out of the snow, kick back and have a cocktail.

Well, some hours later when the fire had died out and we were ready to go to bed it was time to put the awning in. Well, let me tell you – not such an easy task when there is 2 inches of heavy wet snow on it.

We spent about 45 minutes pulling the snow off the awning. Rolling the awning in and out to get as much snow and ice off of it, and sweeping the ice from the roller. It was not a pretty sight.

The awning did finally come in the whole way but not without lots of ice rolled into it!  Thankfully in the morning it was warm enough to roll the awning back out, let the water drain out of it and roll it up properly.

So, the advice from this little story is, DON”T put your awning out when it is snowing. No matter how “cool” you think it is!
