RV Awning Wind and Storm Damage and Destruction

The awning on your rv is designed to provide shade from the sun. There are other benifits such as providing some shelter when it rains. You should always close your awning when you leave the campsite.

This will prevent it from tearing off in a sudden thunder storm or wind gust. It only takes one quick unplanned gust to ruin the awning and tear holes in your rv after ripping the hardware off and possibly damaging not only your rv but a neighbor’s too.

I’ve seen an awning tube shoot through the windshield of a neighbor’s rig before and it creates a huge problem and several days of delay for the windshield to be replaced etc. I’ve been told lots of stories about the damage done by awnings to rv’s. Lots of folks use straps to secure the awning into the ground. When the wind is strong it weakens the bolts screwed into the side wall of the rv and can eventually tear something loose and cause damage.

I’ve seen severe rain storms rip awnings off due to the heavy weight. I know there is sometimes an argument that an angle with the awning lower on one side and hurricaine straps will work just fine. The best advice is to check with the manufacturer regarding the awning you have and the conditions it can withstand.

I always close my awning during storms and when I leave my RV.

I welcome your comments and suggestions
