Seasonal Camping With Your Motorhome
It is important to move your motorhome and take it for a ride every 2 or 3 weeks to keep the truck underneath in good shape. (exercised)
Corrosion can occur in your brakes causing them to stick because they aren’t being used very much. Moisture can build up in your exhaust lines/pipe which can cause the system to rust. You invite a comfortable place for rodents to move in because you are staying in one place for a long period of time. They can build a nest in your engine which could cause a fire when the engine gets hot.
Your motorhome is a camper with a truck underneath. You wouldn’t sit your truck in the back yard for 6 months and expect it to run perfectly. You can’t expect your motorhome either.
Even driving it to the grocery store or for an hour joy ride can help avoid problems.
Imagine you have sat your motorhome for 6 months and now its time to travel back home. You get yourself packed up and tidy for the trip only to find out that something terribly wrong has happened to the engine. Now your trip is delayed days or even weeks.
Wouldn’t you have liked to have know about the problem on the way home from the grocery store? When you weren’t in a hurry to be somewhere else.
Here’s our story:
Our motorhome had sat for 3 months and we were taking a trip for the weekend. We got packed up and tidy and were about 1 hour into our drive when the air conditioner (chassis air) starting making lots of noise. We played around with the switch on the dashboard but then decided that it was “spent”. We drove the remainder of the trip, up and back, without any air conditioning. Thankfully it was only June.
When we returned home we contacted a dealership to have the air conditioner looked at. They were unable to set an appointment for 2 weeks and then when we got there for the repair they had to order a special part. (we had to return 2 weeks later the the dealership again)
All-in-all the repair took about a month. Had we been heading out on a long road journey we would have had to wait a month – or just go on the trip without the air. (And in June/July that would not have been fun!)
The moral of this story – as stated before – keep your engine exercised. It could save you a lot of headaches in long run!
