RV Selection Warm in Cold Weather

Making your choice for an RV should include the climate conditions that you may experience while on the road. If you only plan on camping in the summer, heated enclosed underbelly, heated tanks and other winter options such as heat pump or heat strip in your a/c unit are not required. Also available.. double glass windows and extra insulation rated for freezing temps .

I’ve spent two winters in Fla. and have experienced freezing temps both years. I talked to other campers that were cold and pipes froze etc. Having the heat pumps or heat strips will reduce your propane usage and give your furnace a break. The difference between heat pump and strip is..the heat pump requires your compressor in the a/c to run switching the a/c unit to produce heat. The heat strips only require the fan in the a/c unit to operate and the strip heats up like a hair dryer and the fan circulates the heat. Both options use extra energy and the benefit is that you will use less propane.

At night when the weather is predicted to drop below freezing the floor furnace must be used to keep the floor warm and the pipes from freezing. You also should run the water at a low flow rate at the kitchen sink to keep your water feed from freezing. You could also remove the feed hose and empty the water so it does not freeze. Still run water at the spigot so you can reconnect the hose in the morning. Fill up your fresh water holding tank so you have water overnight and if the campground water pipes freeze you can take showers in the morning and make it through until the pipes thaw.

I welcome your questions or comments.
